Doctor Visits

Since I am a little behind on these posts I am going to include the doctor visits we have had thus far.

5 days old: We were asked to schedule an appointment with our Pediatrician's office 2 days after coming home. Since this was the first time we left the house with a baby we didn't really know how long it would take us to get out of the house and on our way. So needless to say we were rushing to get to the doctor's office on time. When we were there we first had to get him weighed and his length measured. He weighed 7 pounds 8.5 ounces and was 21 inches long. The doctor then came in and talked with us. She was a little concerned about how little he had gained since he left the hospital so they scheduled us just a weight check visit on that Saturday.

1 week old: This was our weight check visit. Again Will was weighed and then measured. He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces this time and was 20 and 1/2 inches long. (Not sure how you lose in length. But I just think measuring his length can be very tricky to get a real accurate measurement.) When Will is weighed he has to have everything taken off, even his diaper. Usually the diaper is the last thing to come off and for good reasons. When we went to take the diaper off, Will began to pee everywhere. I didn't know exactly what to do so I just put my hand over it. Billy and I had a good laugh about this. The nurse just smiled but I am sure she has seen this many times. The doctor said she was pleased that he had gained about 4 ounces in just 2 days. She was no longer concerned about his weight gain.

2 weeks old: Will came in at a whopping 8 pounds 5.2 ounces and 20 3/4 inches long. Since Billy was back to work, Mrs. Keown (Billy's mom) went with me to help carry Will's carrier since I was still a little sore from the C-section. Everything looked good with Will. I did get to meet the lactation consultant for the first time before we left.

1 month old: Will now weighed 9 pounds 5 ounces and 21 inches long. This was the first doctor's visit that I was by myself. I was a little nervous but it all worked out. There was a little mix-up with the paperwork. I was suppose to fill out paperwork online but I was under the impression that I had already filled it out but I had not filled it out. This delayed us from going back but I know what to do now. Everything seemed to be going ok with Will. He did get his second round of Hepatitis B shot. He got the first one while in the hospital but I had never seen him get a shot. He did really well. He cried for a split second and then was fine.

Our next appointment will be at 2 months old. We will get to then see how big he is getting.

So Many Visitors =)

We were so blessed to have so many people come and see us. We spent 4 days and 3 nights in the hospital and every day but the last we had several visitors. Billy's parents were able to visit every day and bring Billy lunch and dinner which was a big help.

The day that Will arrived Lydia and Billy's parents were there before I was even out of recovery. Derek Taylor and Chef, Phil and Sybill Seawell, Jay Harris and Jared Plummer, and Carter, Christy and their little bun in the oven stopped by to visit later on that day. We got to even enjoy a cookie cake from Derek. (I was on a liquid diet only that day so I had to enjoy it the next day!)
On Sunday my dad and Sonia came and stayed for that whole week with us until Saturday. After church we had a group of people stop by, Chad and Raeanne Johnson, Blake and Amanda Derrick, Dave, Trisha, and their little bun in the oven and Trisha's sister, Hunter Whitt and his girlfriend, Hunter, Ravi, Melody and later that day Robyn, Billy's sister stopped by. Chad and Raeanne left and returned with Yogurt Mountain for us because their anniversary was that day and ours was the next. They said they wanted to celebrate with us. Blake and Amanda also left and Amanda came back a little later that day.
On Monday Robyn came back to visit before she left to go back home. During the day it was quiet but later after people got off work we had Amanda Derrick come visit again. Becky Thomson and Jennifer Lagrange and her husband, Andy from school stopped by after work. They even brought us Cookout milkshakes. (Our friends must have known we love ice cream.)
On Tuesday we went home around mid day. When we got home my dad and Sonia had did so much work around the house.

We were so excited to have so many people come visit and see our new addition!

Will Couldn't Wait

Our c-section was scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, but Will had plans of his own.

The Friday before our c-section we decided to go out with friends to see Transformers at the movie theaters. So since we were out late on Friday we were planning on sleeping in on Saturday. But that did not happen. At 7:15 am I woke up and ran to the bathroom not knowing that my water had just broke. I then started to have pretty bad back pain that would not stop. I tried laying back down but that didn't work. I tried laying on the couch with a heating pad but that did not work. In fact the pain was getting sharper. I tried to wake Billy up to tell him. I was almost shouting his name when finally he woke up and ask what was up. I told him and asked him what I should do. He texted his sister to see if she had any advice and told me to call my doctor.

I called and left a message with the on-call doctor. He called me back and I told him what was going on. He told me to calmly go to the hospital and get checked out to see if I was possibly in labor. He said this is not an emergency. So I decided to take a quick shower before going. (Something that Billy still teases me about. :) ) We left the house at 7:50 am.

On the ride to the hospital I told Billy I probably should time the pain because they would probably ask me how far apart it was. I looked at the clock when I first started feeling sharper pain (the pain in my back never stopped). The clock said 7:54. So I waited until the next sharp pain and looked at the clock it said 7:55. I knew that this wasn't good and that it was coming really fast. I even asked Billy if he was going just a little over the speed limit. He told me he was trying to be careful. The ride seemed like it took forever. We arrived at the hospital around 8:15.

We had to be put in a waiting room until they could come get us. When they came to get us they took us back to the triage area and starting doing the necessary IV's and such because they knew I was having a c-section. The nurse even checked me to find out how far along I was. After she did this she pulled Billy out of the area and told him that she could feel Will's feet and that things were going to happen a lot faster but they didn't want to alarm me. Around the time she checked me I started to see 6 nurses in and out of my room and then the doctor showed up. A lot was going on and in a very quick pace. All I could do was ask for pain medicine. They kept telling me they were trying but I kept on insisting. I even asked if they just had something I could take orally. Finally they started to wheel me to the operating room. They told Billy to get changed in this room for expecting fathers so he could come in and be in the operating room with Will was born. In a typical c-section the mother is awake and the father is present.

When I got to the operating room, the nurse said that they were now going to put me to sleep. I replied, "Put me to sleep?!" because I knew that this was not how it was suppose to go but at that time I just wanted the pain to stop and if going to sleep meant I wouldn't feel the pain I was ok with that. The nurse then had to go tell Billy that they put me to sleep because they didn't have enough time to wait for the numbing medicine to take affect. The nurse said she would come get him when the baby was out.

Will was born at 8:43 am. So to recap I woke up at 7:15 with pain. We arrived at the hospital at 8:15 and he was born with in a half an hour. It all went so quickly. We didn't even have enough time to let family know.

By the time I came back from recovery which was about a couple of hours, Billy's parents were there along with my sister. I was unable to see and hold Will until about 2 or 3. Billy was able to watch him get his bath and take pictures of all of it. Here are a few pictures he got.

The Attempt

Our external cephalic version was scheduled during week 37, the day after we found out baby Will was breech. A version as it could be called is an attempt to try and turn the baby so that he is head down instead. Since we had to make the decision whether or not to do a version right after we found out he was breech we were unable to research what a version really entailed. After the appointment people were telling me that this process has known to be painful. That was not too encouraging to hear.

The day of the version we had to wake up and wait for a phone call from the hospital. We were having it done at the hospital in case something happened and the baby would need to be delivered right away. There was a risk that the placenta could detach or labor could be induced by this procedure. We had to wait for a phone call so we wouldn't make a trip into the hospital and they tell us there are too many other patients and that we would have to reschedule. I was told if we didn't hear from the hospital right by 9:30 (our appointment was for 10:15) then I was to call into the OB's office. We waited until 9:30 and didn't get a call so I had to call in. After being placed on hold several times, I was finally called back and was told were waiting on us at the hospital.

Once there we checked in and sat in the waiting room for a bit. They then took us back to the triage area for the Women's Center at Rex Hospital. The procedure would be done in this area. The nurse then had to set up a fetal monitor to monitor the baby. Once the nurse was all ready, the doctor came in. I was then suppose to get medicine that would relax my uterus. The nurse who dropped off the medicine told our nurse that it could only be administered sub-q, which means under the skin. When the doctor arrived, he told the nurse to administer the medicine through the IV. This caused a debate among the doctor and the nurse. The doctor finally won the debate after going to the charge nurse. This made me a little leery because the doctor went against what the medicine bottle said but it all turned out ok. (I have watched too many crime shows where doctor's go wrong. :/) The doctor warned me ahead of time that this medicine would make my heart feel like it is racing and even could make me paranoid.

Once I could feel my heart racing, he said they are going to start. The removed the monitor. The doctor rubbed some kind of oil on my stomach and used both hands to push as hard as he could on my stomach to try and make the baby flip. He first tried to make him flip by pushing on his head and pulling on his lower body to do a forward somersault. That didn't seem to work. So he did a quick ultrasound to see where the head was and tried moving the baby so he would do a backward flip. No luck. By this time, the nurse was telling me to take in deep breathes. Because it was very uncomfortable I was holding my breathe. She had to keep reminding me to breathe. After doing another ultrasound the doctor said the baby has not moved an inch. He said he would try turning him by making him do a forward flip, one more time. Again nothing happened. The doctor then said the baby hasn't even moved a bit and this usually means that they more than likely are not going to turn. So we gave up.

Because there was a chance that the pressure he was putting on my uterus could have made me go into labor or cause something to go wrong, we had to stay and be watched over for an hour. So the fetal monitor was hooked back up and the nurse would periodically come in and check on us. By the end of the hour, the nurse did count 8 contractions but she didn't seemed too concerned. She did warn me that if they got worse to come back immediately.

The doctor did return and he got me in touch with someone back at the OB office to set up a c-section. I was starting to like the idea of knowing when Will would come. The c-section was scheduled for Tuesday, July12.

A Twist in the Road

It has been awhile since I last posted something. Since my last post a lot has happened.

At 32 weeks, one of my doctor's noticed I was starting to measure a little larger than what I should be, meaning Will could be on the bigger side. She said if this trend continues they will do an ultrasound to see what he is measuring at.

At 37 weeks the ultrasound was finally ordered to see if he was going to be a 10 pound baby or not. We hadn't had an ultrasound since week 20 so we were very excited to see Will again. What they found out was not exactly what they were expecting. Will was weighing in at 6 pounds 9 ounces. But as the ultrasound tech was measuring him she asked us, "Did you know that he is breech?" This threw us for a loop. We didn't know what this meant and were eager to talk to the doctor about this. As we sat down and talked with the doctor he gave us 3 options. Option 1 deliver normally, option 2 try to turn him, and option 3 was to go ahead and schedule a C-section. Before we could choose, he threw option 1 off the table. He told us research has now shown that that option is not safe for either the baby or the mother. I know my head was still spinning from what we just learned that I was having a hard time deciding what we should do. The doctor gave some pros and cons for both. One thing that stuck with me was when he said that if you are planning on having more children it might be a good idea to try and turn him because C-sections can complicate future pregnancies.

So Billy and I decided to try and get him turned through a process caused a version. When we told him what we would like to do, he right away went and scheduled us an appointment for the next day at the hospital to try and turn him. He told us the best time to schedule such a procedure would be in the 37th week. All of this came on so sudden and came as a complete shock. We were so confused why they didn't find this out a little earlier. We learned that babies in the womb can turn and don't position their selves head down until about 36 weeks. So even if they did an ultrasound earlier they couldn't tell that he was going to be breech until week 36.

One of the shots we got taken to check out his size, but found out he was breech.

It's A Boy

Soon our house will no longer be ruled by females. This July Billy and I will be adding another boy to the mix. He has been long awaited.

Yesterday was our 18 week checkup and while we were there we got to see that we are expecting a baby boy. He was not bashful in proving that he is a boy. But when it came to showing his face he just wouldn't do it. Even after the tech tried and tried to get him to move, he was comfortable the way he was. Everything else looked great as well. The tech told us we were measuring a week early and the baby was 10oz. She also told us that this did not mean we would be delievering early.

To celebrate afterwards we went to the Angus Barn for the first time. I was amazed at the decor. It really felt like we were in a barn and not a $30-$50 a plate restaurant. But the food was amazing. I got ravoli and Billy got a steak. I even told Billy I would get a lot of grief for not ordering a steak but he said order what I want. So I did. Thanks to the Ellis family for giving us the gift certifciate for the Angus Barn for our wedding a year and half ago. Without it we would have probably never went.

Below are some pictures of our little baby boy.

One Year, Six Months

So it has been over 6 months since I have blogged. Boy, have the times changed in those 6 months. About 3 months ago we added to our family. Her name is Kimber and we think she is a black lab/pit bull mix. You make the call:Since then she has brought laughter and frustration to our lives. When you fall in love with a puppy you forget about all the work that they are. Here is how Kimber came to be in our family. Billy was working at the call center still and a girl at work brought her in to show everyone. The puppy needed a home. The litter she was in was dropped off on a lady's porch that works with the husband of the girl from Billy's work. (Did you get that?) So we are unsure of what she is. Billy texted me a picture of a woman holding the puppy and asked if I wanted it. I had to clarify if he meant the puppy or the woman. I was completely shocked when he said the puppy. Billy had been talking about getting a puppy for a while but I thought he was just talking. So of course I fell in love with the idea of having a puppy but not remembering how much work they are! So that night I had to run out and buy everything we needed for her and we picked her up the next day. Billy wanted to call her Kimber after a hand gun company he likes and I wanted to call her Macy. You see who won that one. =) I get to name the next addition to our family then! =)

Now
Kimber is almost 5 months old and has ALOT OF ENERGY! But with a little sweat and tears I think we should be able to train her in the coming year!
